TerraVision> Perth CAT
The Central Area Transit (CAT) system is a free bus service that operates around central Perth. The CAT system uses award winning Scania buses which feature an active suspension system which lowers the bus to the curb providing easy access for elderly and disabled passengers. The buses were designed with environmentally friendly low-emission engines operated through a "hydrostatic drive" transmission system. The Western Australian State Government chose local company TerraVision to provide a Public Information System to track the CAT buses and provide real-time information to the public. The position of the CAT buses is derived from differentially corrected GPS data processed by the Motorola VP Oncore GPS receiver. This positional information is transmitted from the CAT bus via a Motorola M120 UHF Radio to the central control room. ETA data of the next bus due is then transmitted from the central control room to each bus shelter. The bus shelters themselves contain a digital readout and a button-activated audio announcer that tells you when the next bus is due. The positional information is also graphically displayed upon georeferenced digital maps using a PC. For more information on the CAT System, follow the link to the Department of Transport website.
